Abstract

This paper reports and analyzes an experience of communitarian health education carried out by the Health Movement of
the Eastern Region of Sao Paulo City (MSZL) to train health counselors from 1980 to 1990. The research techniques used were document
analysis and in-depth individual interviews with key respondents, technical team members and former participants of courses. The course
contents, methodology and educational techniques were consistent with communitarian education principles and met the expectations
of the participants. Communitarian health education showed to meet the objectives established for MSZL political training courses and
to increase social control in the health sector.
