Abstract

Obesity is a great world public health problem, and is currently considered epidemic. An estimated 40% of the Brazilian
population has overweight, and this includes children, adolescents and adults alike. It is a risk factor to health and a serious problem
for women in reproductive age. This study aimed to show, by means of a literature survey, repercussion obesity during pregnancy may
have on the fetus. Results showed that gestational obesity is associated to a high risk of serious complications affecting the fetus, such
as macrosomia, congenital malformation and even intrauterine death. These may happen during the prenatal period and may cause
incurable sequels in these women’s children. Health professionals must know the risks implied in gestation in such conditions and thus
give orientation and assistance to these women, educating for health and promoting health.
