The aim of this work was to describe the evolution of obstetrics in Brazil, to describe the concepts of humanization in
Brazilian Medical assistance, to describe the concepts of humanized childbirth, and to discuss costs in Obstetric assistance. The study is
descriptive, bibliographical and transversal. Data were gathered through a bibliographical survey developed from existing material, mainly
publications in books and similar documents. The results had pointed out that there is in Brazil a constant search for the humanized
assistance in both public and private organizations. Besides physical changes, managers in hospital administration must break rules of
hospital resources management. It was observed that small changes in dealing and assisting pregnant women are still helpful for their
feeling secure and good during the process. Small modifications are useful for a significant reduction in the composition of hospital
costs and also as a differential of quality in hospital assistance for health plans providers and public services responsible for assistance.
Although doctors continue to debate the relative advantages of Cesareans, no controversy was identified regarding additional costs
this method imposes to the health system.
