In recent years, it was observed that the production of scientific works that approach care in health and humanization of
care practices have increased significantly. This increase reflects, in part, the transformations accomplished in the health field, with the
creation of the Unified System of Health - SUS, its principles and guidelines. Specifically in the field of mental health, the reorientation
of psychiatric assistance, when advancing from a hospital-centric model to a model of extra-hospital assistance, caused the emergence
of a context which made possible the constitution of interdisciplinary psychosocial technologies which translate in a differentiated care.
Thus, the present work aimed to discuss the different senses of care, considering especially care in mental health. This is a bibliographical
and descriptive study involving searchers in databases of Literatura Latino-americana en Ciencias de La Salud – LILACS and SciELO for the
keyword “care in mental health”. The analysis of the bibliographical material evidenced that conceptions associated to the understanding
of the care act and self-care assume different perspectives, namely, ethical, philosophical, technical-instrumental, political, cultural.
