Abstract

The aim of this study was to analyze the condition of superficial tactile sensibility in adults affected by cortical injury
using the Semmes-Weinstein Monofilaments Test, and to discuss not only the most relevant aspects of this evaluation process but
also the implications to occupational therapy (OT) clinical process based on test results. Twenty seven (27) adult patients, regularly
followed at School Clinic São Camilo with central nervous system injuries were included in the study. Assessment was conducted to
determine whether hand sensation was normal or impaired, and furthermore to demonstrate its use as a resource in OT diagnostic
processes. Data analysis results suggest the relevance of the use of this evaluation technique to determine superficial tactile sensibi-
lity impairments in patients with cortical injury.
